Is arsenic a metal? I have read that arsenic is a metalloid and am confused about arsenic vs. arsenic trioxide(poison). The WELL Building Standard aims to reduce exposure to harmful inorganic contaminants in drinking water, etc.

Answer:

Arsenic is technically a "metalloid". Exposure to arsenic in high enough levels can lead to poisoning. Arsenic trioxide is a known poison. The WELL Building Standard certifies buildings that demonstrate measured performance in 7 concepts for human wellness. In the 7 concepts there are 100 wellness features, two of which address arsenic exposure.

Feature 31: Inorganic Contaminants is a "precondition". Preconditions are required in the WELL Building Standard.

This precondition requires measuring water being delivered to the project site to ensure that levels of dissolved metals (and metalloids) are at or below acceptable levels.

Feature 35: Water Quality Testing, Part 1 "Quarterly Testing" is an optimization (additional point that can be achieved) and addresses testing of all water delivered to the project to measure levels of lead, arsenic, mercury and copper.
