I hold my LEED Green Associate Accreditation and am looking to take one of the LEED AP exams. Do I need to have my CE credits up to date before taking this exam?

Hi Ariel, thanks for your question. No, you don't have to complete any of the 15 continuing education units for your LEED Green Associate before taking your LEED AP exam.

Since LEED APs have 30 CEUs to fulfill biennially, if you had completed any LEED CEUs that would be applicable toward your LEED Green Associate credential, they would roll over to your LEED AP with Specialty, then you'd have an additional 15 CEUs to fulfill on top of whatever was left on toward your Green Associate.

Let me know if you have any additional questions and thanks again,

Thank you Rob, I'm earning more CE credits now and will  began preparing for the O+M exam shortly. What will happen to the credits I'm earning now if I pass and earn the AP credential?

Hi Ariel,

Here's what happened to me: On Nov. 12th, I took the Green Associate Exam. Passed. I did a few CEUs and it was auto-reported to my USGBC account. In the middle of December, I took the BD+C exam. Passed it. However, none of the CEUs that I did for the Green Associate had carried over when I passed the BD+C. It all disappeared. On Dcember 31st, I took the ID+C exam. Passed it (yeah, I even amazed myself!!). An additional 6 LEED-specific credits are now needed for the second specialty.

So, I'm a little confused as to what Rob is saying, but all of the CEUs that I completed during the time I only had the Green Associate had disappeared. I had to start from zero.

Another problem is that while there are many general GBCI-approved courses, I am having difficulty finding free AP specialty-specific credits. Many cost $50-$100 each.

I have been using AEC Daily. Lots of courses to choose from. I am now considering taking either Homes or O+M, but these CEU requirements are really burdensome!

By the way, I never bought any study material for any of the three exams. You CAN do it like that  - all of the info you need is out there for free....

If you have any other questions about this, I'll try to answer. Thank you.
