In other words, green cleaning is the method of cleaning with techniques and products that have minimal impact on the environment and indoor environmental quality. Conventional cleaning products contain toxins that can leach into the environment and have negative health effects on water, organisms and the earth.

Aside from environmental impacts, green cleaning is healthier for occupants as well. Many of the cleaning supplies on the market today contain chemicals that leach into the air, which can be harmful to breathe. In fact, the U.S. EPA has found that indoor air is 2 to 5 times more contaminated than outdoor air. Conventional cleaning supplies can contribute to this problem. The "clean" smell that comes from many cleaning supplies are actually volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. These can cause negative health effects, such as respiratory and skin problems.

Opting for green cleaning supplies with more natural ingredients and fewer toxins will make both the environment and occupants healthier.

Green cleaning is something that you can do yourself. For example, the Daily Green's website has homemade recipes for non-toxic, green cleaning products.

When shopping for green cleaning products, you can look for products that have been labeled by the EPA's Safer Product Labeling Program. Each of these products have been thoroughly screened, and have been found to contain the least harmful chemicals possible.

You can also pay for green cleaning services to come to your home. For example, certain carpet cleaning services may use green techniques or products to clean your home.
